Connect speakers to PS3 - how it works
You can also connect a speaker to your PS3 using an optical digital cable. We show you where the cable is, how to connect the devices and which settings you have to make.
Connect speakers to the PS3
There is only one audio output on the PlayStation 3. Connect speakers, audio receivers or other playback devices using an optical digital cable:
- Plug the cable into the optical audio output of the PlayStation 3 (see picture).
- Connect the other end to the digital audio input of your playback device. It looks exactly like the output of the PS3.
- Active speakers rarely have a digital audio input. Therefore, pay attention to the correct input when buying the cable. Such a cable with jack is suitable for most active speakers.
Output PS3 sound through speakers
Before your speakers play the PS3 sound, you need to make a few settings:
- Open the "Settings" in the "Main menu" of the PlayStation 3.
- Navigate to the "Sound Settings".
- Select the menu item "Audio output settings" and tap on "Optical digital".
- Only tick the following menu if you are familiar with your hardware. Otherwise, skip the selection by clicking "continue" on the right.
- To save the settings you have to press "X".
Tip: You can also upgrade your PS3 to 3D with little effort.
