Volume on the TV changes automatically - what to do?
If the volume on the television changes by itself, it often happens during advertising. Sometimes you notice the problem when switching to another program. On this page we explain what the volume fluctuations are and what you can do about them.
That is why the volume on the television changes automatically
If all stations would adhere to the technical regulation EBU (European Broadcasting Union) R 128 of 2012, there would be no volume fluctuations.
- The EBU's recommendation is to regulate a uniform volume on the television. However, since it is only a recommendation, some stations do not feel bound to it. The EBU R128 states that most of the complaints from viewers relate to volume disagreements.
- The recommendation sets a volume of -23.0 LUFS (Loudness Unit Full Scale).
- The transmitters raise the volume, especially when it comes to advertising. This is intended to increase the user's attention and to ensure that he gets all the information in the advertising.
Volume on the television changes automatically: the solution
The solution to the problem of changing volume on the television is as simple as it is sad: take the remote control in your hand.
- Unfortunately, you have no choice but to always adjust the volume using the remote control.
- Some televisions have the menu item "Automatic volume". Then the device adjusts the volume itself and, if necessary, regulates the tone somewhat. You can find this in the menu under the following keywords:
- Automatic volume adjustment (Toshiba)
- Advanced automatic volume (Sony)
- Automatic volume (LG and Samsung)
- Auto level (Panasonic)
- Automatic volume leveling (Philips)
- Note: These settings also have an impact on the sound. Depending on the program, it may therefore be worth turning off the automatic volume adjustment. For the best sound, we recommend reasonable TV sound bars.
Tip for better sound: Connect an external soundbar to the TV
Another problem that also occurs occasionally: The TV flickers greenish. On the next page, we show the reasons for this.
