Aatrox storms the top lane of the League of Legends with its sustain in flight. With our LoL Guide you get everything from its great skill set.
Aatrox's demonic sustain
Aatrox's Blood Well passive ability is doubly dangerous to your opponents. Because the built-in Revive mechanism makes you incredibly resistant. At the same time, the speed boost lets you deal massive damage and constantly steal life. Make sure you pay for your attacks with life points that go into the pool to revive you. His entire set is based on this.
- With "Dark Flight" (Q) Aatrox bridges the distance to the opponent and pushes him into the air for a short time, unable to move. This means that you are within easy reach for fast-paced melee attacks and can use your other skills. Since you mainly need usability, an early point in "Dark Flight" is enough. At level 5 you only bring the skill to the end.
- "Blood Thirst" / "Blood Price" (W) is Aatrox's primary skill that allows you to switch between a strong lifestyle and an equally strong damage bonus on every third hit. The healing effect is necessary so that despite the damage you inflict on your abilities, you can survive well from the start. With this sustain you can consistently act aggressively against other top laners.
- "Blades of Torment" (E) combines a ranged poke and a slow. For damage, you should bring the ability to level 5 immediately after "Blood Thirst". However, using it as slow will require practice, since the two blades converge with increasing distance and have a smaller target area.
- "Massacre" (R) is Aatrox Ultimate, which you should level whenever possible. The damage you distribute in your immediate environment is particularly useful in team battles. In duel situations, especially the speed boost of "Massacre" combines very well with "Blood Thirst" and can heal you extremely quickly, even from very low health.
The right runes for Aatrox
Aatrox's greatest skill is his extreme attack speed, which causes him to deal tons of damage. As a rule, it is therefore definitely worth playing it with this focus as a glass cannon. But as long as it is not stunned, it can alternatively be built very well to the off-tank. For the runes, it makes little difference.
- Marks: Direct damage makes Aatrox better in almost all situations, which is why AD marks are a safe investment. If you prefer to invest in the late game instead of an easier start, use "armor penetration" or a mix of both instead. Attack speed is also worthwhile so that your heal triggers more often right from the start.
- Seals: You will receive a lot of damage as a melee, so armor should be the first choice for Marks.
- Glyphs: Aatrox is a typical target for AP burst damage. Every bit of magic resistance helps. Whether you play with the direct bonus or scaling runes depends on you and how safe you feel.
- Quintessences: The best bonus you can pull out of quints for the top lane is AD or "Armor Penetration". Therefore adapt the quintessences to your marks.
Aatrox's top masteries
The first thought with Aatrox aggressive skills is of course a strong offensive side with at least 21 points. But it is also suitable as an off-tank if you primarily invest in the defensive masteries and especially take the increased attack speed from the offensive tree.
- Offense: If you plan to act aggressively with Aatrox, the 21 points in the offensive tree are mandatory. Above all the four early points "Fury" go well with his sustain. In general, the offensive for an auto-attacker like Aatrox is obvious, but you can also consider whether you would rather invest points in "Sorcery" instead of "Lethality" and "Frenzy" in order to use your skills a few times more often, Both are good investments.
- Defense: More life, armor, and magical resistance are always useful when you're at the forefront of battle with Aatrox. If you want to be generally more resistant and act more like a tank, 21 points in Defense instead of Offense are also worthwhile. Then be sure to take all skills like "Tenacious" with you that reduce enemy CC effects - nothing is more dangerous for Aatrox.
- Utility: If you like to live risky, invest the remaining 9 points in Defense instead of Utility and boost your Flash with "Summoner's Insight" and "Mastermind". But don't touch meditation! Since Aatrox pays for his skills with his blood, the manaboost is of course completely wasted on him.
Equipment for demon flight
For a relaxed start in top lane you should combine shoes or a longsword with potions, if you feel very safe, you can only start with a "Doran's Blade". Depending on your opponent, you will hardly have any problems healing yourself with the mini waves anyway. If your opponent puts you under pressure from the start and Aatrox 'Sustain doesn't work, you have to react flexibly with defensive items.
- After the shoes, you should immediately work towards the "Bilgewater Cutlass", which you make the "Blade of the Ruined King" as the core element. The item builds on Aatrox's strengths and is therefore always useful. Only when you get extremely fed should you think about building a "Bloodthirster" or an "Infinity Edge" that you would otherwise include in your endbuild - depending on whether you want to focus on critical damage.
- Especially if you are dealing with a lot of magical damage in the opposing team, go quickly in the direction of "Spirit Visage". The passive ability makes your life steal even better and the magic resistance is always useful. If that's not enough against the magicians, also build "Hexdrinker" and then "Maw of Malmortius". "Frozen Mallet" is also very worthwhile for more life and a practical slow effect. Against CC effects, you can either build "Mercury's Threads" or better still "Zephyr" if you can save for so long.
- If you don't have to or don't want to take your defense into account, "Phantom Dancer", "Black Cleaver" and "Last Whisper" are worthwhile. Attack speed, damage, and effects that dismantle or ignore enemy armor in no time make you a fighting machine.
- To become almost immortal, invest in "Guardian Angel". It activates before your own passive, should you fall, and gives you the opportunity to fill your ability with more blood. Actually more of an AP item and therefore only moderately suitable for Aatrox, you can also use "Zhonya's Hourglass" to make yourself even more resistant before you put away your opponents. But that's only worth it if you want to act exaggeratedly as a tank.
Summoner Spells
"Ignite" is almost mandatory for such an aggressive character as Aatrox - but he has to be very careful before the heal debuff. It would only be worse if he was stunned. "Flash" is also hard to imagine without due to its versatile mobility. But if you want to save yourself from risky situations with "Cleanse" or if you want to use "Teleport" to regularly attack careless opponents at the other end of the map, these are also good options.
General Aatrox tips
- Aatrox lives from its life steal. Therefore, despite its high burst potential, be careful when dealing with opponents like "Miss Fortune" or "Tristana", who can reduce your healing skills. Even if Ignite is a common player, you should be more careful.
- Aatrox is hit harder than other characters because its strength comes from its sustain. And stunned, life is difficult to steal. So if possible, let others catch your opponent's CC skills before jumping into the fray.
Once you've mastered the champion of your choice, you'll also need to know about all the enemies so you can compete in the league. But with over 100 playable characters, it's easy to lose track. The Android app League of Legends Champions is ideal for quick lookups, as it tells you everything you need to know about your opponents and allies.
