Renewing the DHCP lease on your iPhone or iPad can help solve network problems. We'll show you what's behind it and how it works.
Renewing a DHCP lease: what's in it?
- To access the Internet at home, you need to connect to your router. No matter whether PC, laptop, iPhone or iPad, each device gets its own IP address from the router.
- By renewing the DHCP lease, this IP address is reset and the device receives a new IP. Usually, the router does this by itself several times a day.
- However, if there are connection problems, manually renewing the DHCP lease can help. Especially in large public networks, it can happen that two devices receive the same IP address and problems arise. Something like this rarely happens in private networks within your own four walls.
- Therefore, you should only renew the DHCP lease if there are actually chances of success. Some home routers simply return the same IP address when they request the renewal. However, the iPhone expects a new IP address, so that this only creates more problems.
Renew the DHCP lease on the iPhone and iPad manually
If you experience connection problems, you can also renew the DHCP lease on your iPhone and iPad yourself:
- To do this, open the "Settings" app and switch to the "WLAN" category.
- Select your current network connection and tap the "Renew lease" button under "DHCP".
- If you confirm the security question with "Renew", your device obtains a fresh IP address.
- Tip: If the problem persists, restart both the iPhone and the router.
Alternatively, you can only reset the iPhone's network settings.
