Petrol engine life - durability factors
The majority of German cars are powered by a gasoline engine. The average lifespan is hardly known to an owner. We have summarized how long you can rely on your petrol engine on average in our home article.
Petrol engine - that is the expected lifespan
The success of the petrol engine began a little over 100 years ago. It is still used today to power many cars and machines.
- A modern petrol engine that has just come from the manufacturer's factory has a lifespan of around 200, 000 kilometers. After that, in many cases it is no longer worth replacing the engine's spare parts and thus extending the mileage.
- However, there are also many petrol engines that can do significantly more than 200, 000 kilometers. Older petrol engines without large electronics in particular have a longer life expectancy. Mileage beyond 250, 000 kilometers is also possible here.
- However, the life expectancies mentioned depend heavily on the care and stress on the engine. If you regularly maintain and maintain your engine, you can achieve a higher mileage. Driving style is also a decisive factor. It has a major impact on how much your engine wears and thus the expected service life.
Influence the durability of the petrol engine
- The most important factor for a long running petrol engine is oil. If the engine is not properly lubricated, it will run out of round and the components will wear out more. You should therefore regularly check the oil level in your car and top up with oil if necessary.
- Regular maintenance in a workshop or by a specialist is also a basic requirement for high engine mileage. If your car does not indicate service to you via the built-in display, you should routinely drive to the workshop every 15, 000 to 25, 000 kilometers for inspection. The engine is checked there and wear parts, such as the oil filter, are replaced.
- In addition to the maintenance and care mentioned, your own driving style plays a decisive role. The gentler this is, the sooner you will achieve a service life that is significantly higher than that expected for gasoline engines. Make sure that you drive in a low speed range while the engine is still cold. Especially in winter it can take up to ten kilometers to reach the right oil temperature.
- Note: If you run your engine with cold oil and high speeds, the wear is particularly high. If you do this every day and also neglect regular maintenance, your engine will only rarely reach 200, 000 kilometers.
The gasoline engine of your car lasts significantly longer than the tires of the car. Therefore, in our next home article you will find out how old tires can be.
