You can also order your groceries in the online supermarket if you don't have time to shop. Our price comparison and an overview of the product range shows you what you should consider when shopping for the five large online supermarkets.
Food bought online quickly delivered to many cities: "All You Need"
- "All You Need" has a comprehensive range of fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy products and household items.
- Shipping: If you live in the Ruhr area, in Cologne, Aachen, Berlin, Bielefeld, Bonn, Braunschweig, Dresden, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt am Main, Hamburg, Hanover, Karlsruhe, Leipzig, Mainz, Mannheim, Munich, Münster, Nuremberg, Potsdam or Stuttgart, you can make an appointment for the evening delivery. For example, deliveries are made between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. or 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. For foods with a short shelf life, the desired delivery is no longer possible. Customers outside of these cities receive the goods with standard shipping from DHL.
- Prices: The price level for "All You Need" is slightly above that of the supermarket next door. In comparison to other online portals, the prices are average. For example, while spaghetti is already available in the supermarket for around 50 cents, you pay 89 cents here. However, there are many special surcharges, for example for fresh food, as we found in the last test.
- Shipping costs: For orders up to 60 euros you pay 6.90 euros shipping costs - that's steep. A minimum order value does not exist. The shipping costs are only waived from a purchase value of 85 euros.
- Conclusion: A little more expensive than at other online supermarkets and with many special supplements. There is no minimum order value for this and the courier service is free. In our test, All You Need only made 4th place.
Order groceries online at Getnow
- Getnow cooperates with the Metro and has one of the largest food ranges in its online shop. There is even fresh fish, bread and rolls here. Although the goods come from the metro, you almost always get individual pieces and not packs of 10. However, there are exceptions, for example 10 pomegranates instead of just one and 15 kilos of juice oranges.
- Shipping: Getnow does not deliver all over Germany yet, but only to Berlin, Munich, Neuss, Düsseldorf, Essen and Frankfurt as well as to some neighboring cities. With an "immediate delivery" the food is there within 1.5 hours, otherwise there are time windows between one hour and two hours.
- Prices: Getnow offers the cheap own brands from the metro and has numerous branded goods and fresh goods in stock. Spaghetti from 39 cents, baked pretzel sticks also for 39 cents, bananas for 1.06 euros per kilo. The prices are identical to those from the supermarket - even at some discounters you sometimes pay more. A redfish fillet costs 1.80 euros, catfish fillet from 2.60 euros.
- Shipping costs: Immediate deliveries cost 6.99 euros, all other deliveries 3.99 euros. There is no minimum order value, but from 40 euros the shipping costs do not apply.
- Conclusion: Getnow offers the full scope of a large supermarket at the same prices as in the supermarket. This is extraordinary and raises the question of how it can still be worthwhile for Getnow and the Metro. It is quite possible that the prices are so low only at the start of the online service and rise later. The only catch so far is that Getnow is only represented in a few cities.
"Lebensmittel.de": practical food delivery
- "Lebensmittel.de" offers you a huge selection of products that you can order, for example, as a regular subscription. You will then receive items that are frequently required every 14 days, monthly or every quarter and delivered directly to your home. Frozen products are also included in the range (delivery fee plus EUR 4.90).
- Dispatch: The ordered goods are delivered the day after next - at least in theory. In our test, a delivery arrived 13 days after the planned delivery date. Some foods were already spoiled. Next-day delivery is also available for several major cities. The goods are sent by DHL or DPD, frozen products with dry ice in a cooler bag. But it doesn't always work smoothly (for a detailed test).
- Prices: At "Lebensmittel.de" you often have to expect significantly higher prices than you are used to from the supermarket. In comparison to other online grocery shops, "Lebensmittel.de" usually performs worse - that is, more expensive. But there are a few prices like in the supermarket next door: powdered sugar for 39 cents, roasted peanuts for 94 cents and tea bags for 49 cents. Fruit and vegetables are no longer available at Lebensmittel.de. You will also search in vain for frozen goods.
- Shipping costs: There are no shipping costs for orders within Berlin (in the Berlin Shop). If you set a specific time window, service fees may be charged. For deliveries to other cities, a shipping fee of 4.90 euros will be charged. From a goods value of 40 euros, however, this is no longer applicable.
- Conclusion: Lebensmittel.de takes last place in the CHIP test because it is the most expensive shop and a test delivery arrived almost two weeks late. Some food was already spoiled. In the meantime, there are also significantly cheaper products - and no more perishable food.
Cheap online groceries for Düsseldorf, Cologne and the Ruhr area: myTime
- "myTime" has a confusing price system in which the price-performance ratio does not go against the competition. Only Lebensmittel.de did worse in our test. You can get a variety of organic products from myTime - from fruits and vegetables to staple foods and frozen foods.
- Shipping: If you live in Cologne, Düsseldorf or the Ruhr area, you can have your shopping cart sent home between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. DHL delivers to other locations on a desired date. In the test, it worked quite quickly. In addition, the products ordered were in perfect condition.
- Price: In comparison to other food portals, "MyTime" now also has many cheap foods on offer. Cork chains for 1.25 euros, spaghetti for 75 cents, onions for 79 cents (500g net) and grapes for 1.99 euros (500g).
- Shipping costs: 4.90 euros you always pay for the shipping costs, regardless of the purchase value. For frozen and fresh products there is an additional 4.90 euros.
- Conclusion: A (partly) inexpensive supermarket with a large selection but high fixed costs. In our test, the products were in top condition. The delivery time was also met. 3rd place overall in the CHIP test.
Rewe: Top online supermarket with a large delivery area but ...
- ... hardly any fresh products. At Rewe-Online there is no minimum order value for parcel deliveries - you can only order free of charge from 90 euros. Cheese and meat products from the fresh food counter can be delivered (test 2015) if you have a cooperating Rewe market nearby. Then the minimum order value is also 50 euros.
- Shipping: Rewe-Online supplies customers in over 15 cities, including Hamburg, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Cologne, Munich, Homberg, Frankfurt and Stuttgart (details). The delivery takes place in our own Rewe delivery van. We had no complaints about the freshness, temperature and condition of the products in both test orders. If there is no cooperating Rewe store nearby, Rewe ships with DHL.
- Price: The prices for the food correspond to the actual prices in the Rewe market. Thanks to Rewe's own brands, there are, for example, inexpensive types of pasta for just under 50 cents. But: Fruit and vegetables are often billed according to quantity and not by weight as in the supermarket. This is often more expensive.
- Shipping costs: The first order is free. The delivery costs for each additional order are between 0.00 and 5.90 euros. It depends on how big the workload is at the desired delivery time. You can check the exact times on the Rewe website during the ordering process. Our test showed that especially in the morning cheap deliveries are possible.
- Conclusion: After our 2015 test, Rewe is the only mature online supermarket. The products arrive in good quality, the prices correspond to the supermarket prices and special surcharges are kept within limits. However, the Rewe delivery service is not yet available in many regions. Then there is only durable food and nothing fresh.
Buy groceries with Amazon Pantry: Exclusive to Prime members
Prime members can also order groceries from Amazon - but the shipping giant costs a lot:
- With Amazon Pantry, Amazon delivers durable food to your home in two to three days. However, fresh items such as fruit and vegetables are missing, as are frozen products.
- Shipping: Amazon sends its pantry boxes all over Germany via a normal shipping company. Since the articles do not have to be cooled, there are usually no problems.
- Price: Since Amazon does not have its own brands, you pay significantly more for almost all products than Rewe and Co. So spaghetti costs at least 1.29 euros and Pringles over 2 euros.
- Shipping costs: As a Prime member, you pay a flat fee of 4.99. There is no minimum order value, but there is also no omission of the shipping costs for a high purchase value. The service is not available to non-members.
- Conclusion: Expensive products and no fresh articles - that's not how Amazon convinces. Because test winner Rewe Online is far superior to him.
