With leJOS you can also install Java on your Lego Mindstorms. In this practical tip, we reveal exactly how to do this.
leJOS - Java for the Lego Mindstorms
With Lego Mindstorms you can build many robots yourself. By default, however, no Java programs can be run on the little helpers. With a little trick, you can still use Java on the Lego Mindstorms NXT.
- To do this, first download the Java Development Kit 7u80 for "Windows x86". Be sure to choose the "Windows x86" version, even if you have a 64-bit computer, as this version is the only way to install.
- Now you need a driver for your NXT. If you already have Lego Mindstorms software installed, you can skip this step. Otherwise you can either install the driver from the original Mindstorms CD or download it from the Internet.
- Finally, you need a small tool with which you can flash leJOS.
- Run the tool and click "Next". Then select the system folder of the JDK version you just downloaded.
- Check "Additional Components" for "Select Components". From here you only have to click on "Next".
- Once the installation has been completed, tick "Launch NXJ Flash utility" and click "Finish".
- Now connect your NXT to the PC with a USB cable, click on "Flash leJOS firmware", on "OK" and then on "YES".
- Depending on the version of Windows, the computer may lose connection to the NXT. If this is the case, open the device manager, look for the "Ports" section and right-click on the "Bossa Program Port". Then select "Update device drivers", search for installed drivers on your PC and select "LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT Firmware Update Mode". You can then finish the setup.
- Once installation is complete, you can program Lego Mindstorms with Java.
- Tip: If you want to use the old Mindstorms firmware again, you can reinstall it in the Mindstorms software under the [Tools]> [Update NXT Firmware] tab.
