Lenovo Thinkpad: Turn off Trackpoint
We show you various tips on how to switch off the trackpoint on the Lenovo Thinkpad. The little red dot is a relic from long forgotten days and was used as a mouse replacement when the touchpads known today were not yet widespread.
Deactivate trackpoint - this is how it works in the bios
Not every tip works with every model. Over the years, Lenovo has created several ways to turn off the trackpoint. The fastest and easiest method is through the bios. This path often works, especially with older Thinkpad generations:
- To do this, start your notebook with the power button and immediately press "F1" several times. Then you are in the bios.
- Use the arrow keys to navigate to the "Config" item and then to "Mouse / keyboard".
- Click on the sub-item "Trackpoint" and deactivate the option.
Deactivate Trackpoint directly in Windows
Users of newer models receive two additional ways that you can deactivate the unusual mouse replacement:
- Press the [Fn] and [F8] keys on the desktop simultaneously. Now a small window opens with the title "Ultranav Options"
- Here you can choose different settings. In our case, navigate to "Activate touchpad (deactivate trackpoint)". You can of course also undo the settings in the same way.
Deactivate "Red dot": the control panel also helps
The system control also takes you with the countless options to various PC components such as the Trackpoint:
- Open the Control Panel in Windows (for Windows 7/8 / 8.1 you can reach your destination using the search function or "Start" / "Windows Button").
- Go to the "Mouse" option or search for it using the line at the top right of the screen.
- Switch to the "Ultranav" tab and uncheck "Activate Trackpoint".
At least one of the three ways shown leads you to the goal, namely the deactivation of the trackpoint. However, if you get used to the unusual navigation via trackpoint, you will quickly see that even with the small red dot you can navigate quickly and precisely. However, this actually takes some practice. However, many users swear by a real PC mouse anyway. You can find a selection of successful gaming models in our gaming mouse comparison.
