Lenovo Y500: How to install an SSD hard drive
If you want to install a fast SSD in your Lenovo Y500, it sounds more difficult than it is. Because this laptop model can be opened easily and all components are easily accessible. Furthermore, you can exchange parts without much specialist knowledge. We explain step by step what you have to do.
Install SSD in Lenovo Y500 - how it works
In general, you should ground yourself before tinkering with a PC or laptop. This works for example on a radiator. This will prevent static electricity from leaking onto your laptop and possibly damaging parts. After you have discharged yourself, you can start. In the picture gallery we show you the instructions step by step.
- The first thing to do is to remove the battery. To do this, you have to release a safety latch on the back and at the same time push and hold another latch outwards. Then you can carefully pull the battery out of the anchor.
- Now it's time to screw. In total you have to loosen 9 small Phillips screws on the back. Please make sure that your screwdriver really fits the screws exactly. Because it is really annoying if you should turn off a screw head. After you have removed all screws, you can lift the housing cover with slight pressure. Some clipped brackets are released. So do not be alarmed if there are some crackling noises.
- Once you've opened your case, you can start to remove the old HDD. To do this, you have to loosen two screws and pull the old hard drive and bracket out of the SATA slots. In theory, you can also operate an SSD in addition to your HDD in this laptop. There is a little space at the bottom right and an m-SATA slot.
- All you have to do now is remove the old hard drive from the bracket and attach the SSD in its place. To do this, you have to remove two Phillips screws on each side. Be sure to mount the SSD in the same position as the hard drive before.
- After you have successfully mounted the SSD, slide it back into the SATA slots. Don't forget to replace the screws.
- Now you just have to do all the steps backwards. Make sure you have not forgotten any screws and slide all safety levers back into the "Locked" position. Now you can install an operating system on your new SSD.
