Dragonflies - that's how dangerous insects are
The large types of dragonflies in particular can look beautiful but also dangerous. One often hears that the insects sting or even bite. We tell you whether the fear of animals is justified.
Dragonflies are not dangerous to humans
There are many different types of dragonflies, some of which are very large and therefore inspire respect. For example, blue-green mosaic maidens achieve an impressive wing span of 110 mm. The insects can be found on waters, meadows and forest edges.
- Even if it looks like this, the dragonflies have no sting. What many people think is a sting is a kind of drill that is used to lay the eggs.
- The dragonfly has biting tools to hunt and eat other insects. However, the mouth tool cannot penetrate human skin. If you catch a dragonfly with your hand, you only feel a little pinch.
- The insects do not attack humans. You are at most curious. Let the animal do and don't hit after it. It won't be long before it flies away again.
- Note: All types of dragonfly are protected. The insects must therefore not be killed.
