At some point you have to dispose of your fairy lights. Because even if it usually only lights up for a few weeks a year, it does not last forever. However, you should not simply throw the lamps in the household waste, because this way they cannot be recycled.
Dispose of fairy lights: In which rubbish?
The Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act applies to fairy lights. Therefore, they have no place in the residual waste or in the yellow bin. You can recognize this by the symbol of the crossed out garbage can on the packaging. To dispose of fairy lights professionally, you have the following options:
- You can take the chain of lights to the nearest recycling center free of charge. You can find out where this is from your municipality or city administration.
- Alternatively, you can also try to hand in the fairy lights to an electrical retailer. Larger businesses in particular often accept them and take care of disposal. In this way you contribute to the fact that up to 90% of your fairy lights can be recycled.
- This applies to all fairy lights that work with LEDs. It does not matter whether the LEDs are permanently installed or whether they can be removed.
- However, if your chain of lights consists of light bulbs with filaments instead of LEDs, you can dispose of the light bulbs in the household waste.
In the next post we will show you how you can easily calculate how high the electricity consumption of the light chain was.
