Planting and caring for lovage: how it works
If you plant lovage in your garden, the tasty culinary herb will grow almost by itself. In this article, we give you tips on choosing a location and caring for lovage.
Plant lovage - how it works
Lovage is also known as maggot herb and is often called that. This is because the essential oils in the plant exude a maggi-like smell. The best time to plant is spring.
- Soil: The plant is not very demanding. It actually thrives on any soil.
- Location: Liebstöckel prefers a partially shaded location, but can also cope with a lot of sun. Then you just have to pour a little more.
- Extent: Maggi herb is not a plant for a small bed. Lovage grows quickly and can grow to the height of a man. The popular culinary herb is also growing in width. For this reason, you should keep a distance of at least one meter from the neighboring plants.
- Planting: To put lovage in the garden, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. Put the plant in and cover the root ball with soil. Then press the earth a little. Then water the planting site thoroughly.
- Tip: To prevent the roots from spreading uncontrollably, you need a root barrier. The easiest way to do this is to plant lovage in a sufficiently large pot.
Caring for lovage
As mentioned at the beginning, lovage is an extremely undemanding plant.
- It is important that the earth does not dry out. Lovage must be watered regularly .
- The Maggikraut is one of the most consuming herbs. Since the plant leaches the soil, it is best to move it every few years .
- The spice plant loses all parts of the plant above ground in late autumn and does not sprout again until spring. This is the best time to move lovage.
- Liebstöckel is happy about a little fertilizer from time to time. Homemade nettle slurry is well suited and inexpensive.
- You can cut lovage regularly. There is little to consider. Limit the height and width growth according to your wishes by cutting back . Conventional secateurs are sufficient for cutting.
As already mentioned, lovage is hardy and sprouts every spring. If you are looking for more hardy herbs, you will find an overview in our next plant tip.
