Light products promise feasting without regrets. The foods are supposed to support a diet effectively and maintain the slim silhouette effortlessly. Nobody has to do without enjoyment - as far as advertising. But, is this really the truth?
Light products - then a food can be called that
Light products have been on the shelves in grocery stores since the 1980s. After the initial euphoria, however, the critical voices are increasing.
- What makes a food a light product is completely different. One product contains less sugar, while another has reduced fat content. Since 2007 it has been regulated across the EU when a food is declared as a light product.
- According to the law, a food can be sold as a light product if it has at least 30 percent less nutrients or energy. If it is fat, it must be reduced by at least 50 percent. A suitable food is used as the basis for assessment.
- However, the legal requirement does not mean that the Light product has to have fewer calories.
Food - that's why light products are often neither healthy nor low in calories
Take a close look at Light products and find out in advance. Nutrition experts are quite critical of many light products and rightly so.
- It is not uncommon for light products to have fewer calories and more additives. The ingredient lists include additives such as flavors, emulsifiers, stabilizers, sugar substitutes, yeast extract and preservatives. The health effects of these additives are often unknown. This applies in particular to the interaction of the various additives.
- Fat and sugar are flavor carriers. If they fall away or are reduced, a replacement is needed. It may be that a light product contains less sugar but more fat or vice versa. Neither of these contributes to a successful diet. Neither too much sugar nor too much fat is good for your health.
- There is also a great risk that light products will eat more. Even if the food has slightly fewer calories, the diet effect is canceled.
- Conclusion: Instead of reaching for the more expensive Light products, it usually makes more sense to select the "normal" food. Prepare it deliberately and avoid "fattening agents" such as fat sauces. This not only saves you money but also calories.
