Install Linux on Mac - Here's how
To install Linux on MacOS you can use the "Parallels Desktop" software. This is how you create a virtual machine on your Mac, in which any Linux operating system can then run.
Install Linux on MacOS
To install Linux on MacOS you first need the Parallels Desktop software solution.
- First install Parallels Desktop on your Mac. You can find a test version for this on Chip.de, which you can use free of charge for 14 days. The full version is available for 80 euros.
- Now you need your Linux as an image file or a finished CD / DVD. If you do not have Linux, you can download a selection of Linux distributions from us.
- Start Parallels Desktop.
- In the Parallels menu bar you can now click on "New ..." under "File" to create a new virtual machine.
- Now a window opens in which you can create a new machine. If you want to install Ubuntu as your Linux, you can even download it here. Now select the option "Create Windows or other OS from DVD or image file" and click on "Continue".
- In the following window you can now select the type in which your Linux operating system is available and specify the storage location.
- Parallels Desktop is now asking about the type of operating system to enable better integration with MacOS.
- Depending on the selection, you can still adjust the integration in the next windows.
- Now enter a location and a name for the file in which the virtual machine will be saved. The file can get very large under certain circumstances.
- Parallels now creates the machine. After completion, you can use your Linux normally as if it had been installed on your own computer.
With Parallels you can of course also install Windows or even Android on your Mac. A free alternative to Parallels Desktop is the Freeware Virtual Box for MacOS.
