Linux: Install BitTorrent Sync - so it'll work
You can also use the BitTorrent Sync tool on your Linux computer. We show you how it works.
Install BitTorrent Sync on Linux
This manual describes the manual installation. Depending on the Linux distribution used, you can also install BitTorrent Sync using a built-in package manager.
- The first thing to do is download the package from the BitTorrent Sync website.
- Select the right package for your system under the "Linux" category. In most cases "Linux_x64 (glibc 2.3)" or "Linux i386 (glibc 2.3)" is the right one - depending on whether you are using a 32- or 64-bit system.
- Open a command line and use the "cd" command to change to the directory with the file that you downloaded earlier.
- Now unzip the file with the command "tar -xvzf FILE". Replace "FILE" with the file name of the downloaded archive file. For example: "tar -xvzf bittorrent_sync_glibc23_x64.tar.gz".
- After unpacking you will receive the three files "LICENSE.TXT", "README" and "btsync". "btsync" is the executable program file. You can move this to another location.
Start BitTorrent Sync on Linux
Starting BitTorrent Sync is very easy after installation:
- Open a terminal window.
- Change back to the folder of the "btsync" file with the "cd" command.
- Now start the program with the command: "./btsync".
- As you can see in the output, the program is started (without graphical interface).
- You can now access BitTorrent Sync through your browser. To do this, simply type in your line: "localhost: 8888".
