Forgot password on Linux Mint
Note: These instructions refer to Linux Mint. Under other Linux systems you need the corresponding password for the user "root", which you set during installation.
- Start Linux Mint and hold down the [Shift] key so that recovery mode starts. If that doesn't work, use the [Esc] key.
- Navigate with the arrow key in the menu to the option "root" and select it with the key [Enter].
- Enter the command "mount -o remount, rw /" and confirm it with [Enter].
- To change the password, enter the command "passwd NAME". Replace "NAME" with your Linux username. Tip: You can read out your user name under Linux using the "cat / etc / passwd" command.
- Now enter your new password, confirm it with [Enter] and repeat the process. The password is not shown on the screen.
- Linux is ready to start again with the commands "sync" and "mount -o remount, ro /".
- End the process with the "exit" command and restart Linux Mint.
