Linux: Install and set up Wine

If you want to use Windows software under Linux, you often use Wine. We'll show you how to install and set up the program.
Install Wine - Here's how
- To install Wine on your Linux computer, all you have to do is type the following command into the terminal: "sudo apt-get install wine". If you are using Ubuntu 16.04 or later, enter "sudo apt-get install wine-stable".
Set up wine - that's how it's done
Enter "winecfg" in the terminal to configure Wine. Now a window opens in which you can make some settings.
- In the "Applications" tab, you can specify which version of Windows to imitate Wine. Which one is best here cannot be generalized and depends on your programs. You can also set settings for individual applications.
- In the "Drives" tab you can specify the drives on which Wine should operate. By default, all drives recognized during installation are entered here.
- In the "Graphics" tab you can specify how large your desktop should be in full screen mode. You can also adjust the screen resolution here. This may be necessary if the font size does not fit in the applications.
- The point »audio« usually works well with the standard settings.

Open Windows programs in Wine - Here's how
To open programs with Wine, you must enter the following into the terminal: "wine start / Unix", followed by the absolute file path under double quotes.
