Stream LoL yourself - how it works on Twitch.tv
In this practical tip you will learn how you can stream LoL yourself on Twitch.
Stream LoL yourself on Twitch.tv: Set up Open Broadcaster software
- First you need a streaming program to run a stream. The free Open Broadcaster Software (OBS), for example, is ideal for this.
- After installation, open the program and carry out an update first. To do this, click on "Check for updates" in the Help menu.
- When the program is up to date, open the settings menu and here the sub-item "Coding".
- Depending on the quality in which you want to stream, set the "Max. Bitrate" here. The buffer size is automatically adjusted.
- If you want to stream in 1080p, a bit rate of 3300 is recommended, for 720p at least 1800.
- If your internet connection is not fast enough, you should provide at least 80 percent of your maximum upload speed. In a separate practical tip, we will explain how you can find out how fast your internet connection is.
- Now switch to the broadcast settings. Enter "Livestream" as the mode, select Twitch as the streaming platform and Frankfurt as the FMS URL. You also need your Twitch streamkey.
- You can find the streamkey on your Twitch dashboard. Click here on the far right on "Streamkey" and display your key.

Stream LoL yourself: create OBS scenes
- League of Legends is a little bit more demanding to stream than other games because it uses different windows for the game client and the actual matches.
- First of all, you have to create the appropriate scenes in the OBS. To do this, right-click in the "Scenes" window in the OBS start window. Rename the existing scene or create a new one.
- You need at least two scenes: one for the character selection, the other for the actual match. Name the scenes accordingly, for example "Client" and "Game".
- Usually there is also a welcome screen and a pause screen when streaming, which you can also create as individual scenes. However, these are irrelevant for the actual LoL stream.
- Every scene needs a source. Therefore select "Client" and right-click in the "Sources" window. Under "Add" select the option "Window capture".
- Select the LoL PVP client under "Window". Note that the client must run in parallel for this.
- Then you have further setting options to adapt the window to your needs. For example, you can center it and display the client in full screen.
- Now you can stream the game client. However, as soon as you start the game mode, the stream no longer updates because another window is now in focus.
- Therefore you now have to set up the "Game" scene. Select a source here as well, this time as a "game recording".
- Start a LoL match or watch another match to start game mode. Then you can select this as a window when setting up the scene.
Stream LoL yourself: Switch between scenes automatically
- When you have set up all the scenes you need, you still have to switch between them. This is usually done by hand.
- This is where the plugin "Simple Scene Switcher" comes in, which OBS has now officially integrated into the program.
- Open the scene change in the settings menu.
- Here you select the respective window and the associated scene, for example the PVP.net Client and the scene "Pre-Game". Then click on "Add".
- Note that the windows must also be available here so that they can be selected. So you have to run a game in the background so that you can assign the "League of Legends Client" to the "Game" scene.
- If all scenes are in the list, you can now also set whether the scene changer should be activated automatically. You can also set a hotkey and a standard scene.
- If the scene changer is activated and set correctly, you can now stream LoL without having to switch between the scenes yourself.
