Mac doesn't recognize SD card - what to do?
If your Mac no longer recognizes your SD card, your data is not yet lost. We'll show you what you can do to make the Mac recognize the memory card.
1. Mac does not recognize SD card - flip switch on SD card
There is usually a small switch on the side of SD cards, which is intended to prevent the SD card from being overwritten accidentally. If this is flipped over, it may happen that the computer has no access to the SD card and therefore cannot recognize it.
- Flip the circuit breaker and check again that the Mac recognizes your SD card.
2. Mac does not recognize SD card - check for defects
If you have problems with external storage options, the question always arises whether it is due to the SD card or your Mac. First check whether your memory card is still working correctly and can save files.
- To do this, insert the SD card back into the device in which you normally use it. Try to access or write to the SD card with this device.
- Usually use the SD card in a camera, take a photo and check that it has been saved so that you can access it.
3. Mac doesn't recognize SD card - check Mac
If there is no problem with the SD card, the next step is to check that your Mac is working properly.
- If possible, check on another Mac to see if the SD card is recognized.
- If it is not due to the operating system, use an external card reader into which you can insert the SD card. This will check whether it is in your Mac's SD slot.
4. Mac doesn't recognize SD card - repair SD card
You can use the hard disk utility to repair internal and external storage media.
- Open your Mac's hard drive utility. Check that the SD card is shown in the list.
- If it has been recognized there but cannot be opened as a medium, repair the memory card using the tool.
- To do this, click the "Repair Volume" button and follow the instructions.
5. Mac does not recognize SD card - last resort: consult an expert
If these suggested solutions didn't work, then only one thing helps: Find an expert for Macs, for example an authorized Apple dealer.
- This can take a close look at your Mac's connectors and help you solve the problem.
In the next practical tip, we will show you how to format an SD card with your Mac.
