If you set up a Mac filter for your WLAN router, you restrict the access rights to your home network. This practical tip shows you how to set a filter for a so-called media access control address.
Set up the Mac address filter for the Fritz! Box
- Enter "fritz.box" in the address line of your browser. Then enter your password.
- Click on [Wireless network] in the menu bar on the left
- In the main window you will now see the devices that are connected to the Fritz! Box (see picture). Below this, select the option "Limit WLAN access to known devices" and click on [Apply].
- This means that access to your WiFi network is initially restricted to the devices that are already connected. If you want to add more devices, click [Add WLAN device]. You must then enter the Mac address of the new device here.
Mac filter on a Speedport router
If you have a router from Deutsche Telekom (Speedport), proceed as follows.
- Enter "speedport.ip" or "192.168.2.1" in the address bar of your browser. Then log in with your password and confirm with [OK].
- In the menu bar on the left click on [Security] and select the sub-item [Mac filtering].
- Click on [Operating status] and change the setting to "On". Then confirm the setting with [Save].
- You can add new devices via [Take over & share PCs]. For this you need the respective Mac address.
How to find out the Mac address
To add new devices, you need the Mac address of the PC or mobile device. This consists of six groups of two from numbers and letters (hexadecimal) such as: 00-13-02-AF-B6-1C
- For most mobile devices (smartphones, tablets, ebook readers) you will find the Mac address in the WLAN settings.
- For Windows PCs from Windows 2000 onwards, press [Win] + [R] and enter "cmd". A DOS window opens. Enter "ipconfig / all" here. Under "Wireless LAN adapter wireless connection" you will find the Mac address under the "Physical address".
- For Mac OS X, open the [System Preferences] and click on [Network] in the "Internet & Network" section. Select the airport card here and read the Mac address under Airport.
