Mac: Rename several files at the same time - so it'll work
In this practical tip, we will show you how you can rename several files on your Mac at the same time.
1. Prepare to rename multiple files with Automator
Typically, you cannot inherently rename multiple files at once on the Mac. However, there is a tool you can use to "teach" your Mac to rename files in one go. In the picture gallery we illustrate the individual steps.
- You open your program folder and select "Automator".
- Then select "Service". A new window will open.
- To the right of "Service receives selected (s)" select "Files or Folders" in the first box and next to "in Finder".
- Now select "Files & Folders" under Actions (Libraries). Next to it, search for "Rename Finder Items" or "Rename Finder Objects" and double click on the selection.
- A pop-up window opens. In the confirmation dialog "Copy Finder objects" select "Do not apply".
- Now a drop-down menu opens in the automator. In the first field, select "Replace text". Then click Options and select "Show this action while running the workflow".
- Save the action by clicking on "File" in the top bar and then "Save (as)" or on Mac OS X "Save". For example, give the action the name "Rename Files".
2. Rename multiple files in Finder on Mac
Now you have saved an appropriate method with the Automator that allows you to rename several files at the same time.
- Open the Finder.
- Then mark any number of documents or photos.
- Now select "Finder" in the top left menu bar and then "Services".
- You can now select your "Rename files" method and rename the files.
