Mac Mini: RAM upgrade
You can easily upgrade the memory of the Mac Mini. However, it is important to take into account the maximum storage capacity, which varies depending on the model.
Upgrade the Mac Mini with the correct memory module
Before adding more memory to your Mac Mini, you need to find the right memory module for your model. There are some differences depending on the year of construction:
- Mac Mini models from the end of 2012 can be operated with up to 16 GB RAM.
- In Mac Minis from mid-2010 to mid-2011, you can install up to 8 GB of RAM.
- A 2009 Mac Mini runs with up to 4 GB of RAM.
- All older Mac Mini models can only be upgraded with a maximum of 2 GB RAM.
- The information relates to the capacity of both working memory modules in the Mac Mini.
- Do not install different memory modules, but always two identical ones.
Open Mac Mini to upgrade
It is relatively easy to get the memory modules of your Mac Mini. However, you should be careful because the brackets are filigree and break off easily:
- Be sure to turn off the Mac Mini and remove the AC adapter and any other attached cables.
- Turn your Mac over and place it on a soft surface to avoid scratches. Rotate the bottom cover counterclockwise. The cover is unlocked when the filled circle is below the empty circle (red marking).
- Press the top edge of the cover, approximately above the "M" of the Mac lettering. The opposite side should now pop out so that you can lift off the entire cover from there (blue marking).
Remove and replace the Mac Mini memory module
Now it is time to remove the old RAM and install the new one. Apple advises you to wear an anti-static wrist strap when working inside the Mac Mini.
- When the Mac Mini is open, you can see the memory banks on the right.
- Carefully loosen the spring clips at the top and bottom of the memory modules. The right edge should now jump up so that you can carefully pull the RAM out of the slot.
- Below that is another memory module that you can remove in the same way.
- Now you can install the new memory modules. To do this, push them with the notched edge first from the right into the holder and press them down until the holders click into place.
- In this way you also install the upper memory module.
- Now you can close your Mac Mini again. Do the opposite of the steps to open your Mac.
