Mac OS: Eject CD doesn't work - what to do?
This guide shows you what you can do if ejecting CDs no longer works on your Mac.
1. Mac OS: Eject CD from the trash
If the CD no longer ejects when you press the eject button, you have a simple alternative. However, this assumes that the CD has been recognized and read.
- In this case, drag the CD icon on your desk to the trash in the dock. The wastebasket changes to an eject symbol and your CD should be ejected.
2. Mac OS: Eject CD via terminal command
If the CD is particularly stubborn and cannot be ejected using the usual methods, you can force the ejection with a terminal command.
- To do this, open the terminal on your Mac. To do this, press the combination CMD + space bar and enter "Terminal" in the search. Open the program with the Enter key.
- Enter the command "drutil tray eject" (without quotes).
- After confirming with Enter, your CD will be ejected.
3. Last solution: restart forces CD ejection
- If nothing helps, the last solution is always a restart.
- Important: Press the left mouse button continuously during the restart until the CD is ejected.
Mac OS: CD caught - what to do?
- If the CD has got stuck, for example due to a detached sticker, then you should be particularly careful and under no circumstances try to force it.
- To avoid damaging your drive, you should consult a specialist who can professionally remove the CD.
