Install Mac OS X El Capitan - Here's how
If you want to install the new Mac OS X El Capitan now, you need access to the current beta program. We'll show you how to download the new Mac OS X and set it up on your Mac and MacBook.
Mac OS X El Capitan: Install beta version
- Since Mac OS X El Capitan is currently a beta version, you should not primarily use it on your Mac. Installation on a second partition is much more advantageous.
- There are certain risks with every installation of beta software. Be sure to perform a backup using Time Machine beforehand. If something goes wrong, you can then restore your data.
- To download OS X El Capitan, you must sign in to the Apple OS X Beta software program. As soon as the public beta begins, Apple will notify you. Only registered developers can currently test the new Mac OS X.

- First, create a new partition on your Mac. We show you how this works in this practical tip.
- Make sure that you select "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" as the "Format". The size of the partition should be around 30 GB or more.
- If OS X El Capitan is available for download, you will receive an email from Apple with a download code.
- Download the new OS X from the Mac App Store and then start the installation.
- Select the partition you just created and follow the further instructions for installation.
