Mackeeper: Remove pop-ups on OS X.
The Mackeeper tool officially presents itself as an auxiliary program, but opens unauthorized pop-ups in the Safari browser. This can quickly become a nuisance:
- First close all browser windows.
- Open the "Applications" folder and navigate to the "Utilities" subfolder. Start the "Activity Viewer" here.
- Select the "All Processes" option above.
- Search for "MacDefender", "MacSecurity" or "MacProtector" under "Process Name". These are the common names of the program.
- Click on the respective name and end the process with the "End process" button.
- Then go to the "Applications" folder.
- Here you must now search for folders that contain one of the names mentioned above.
- Drag the appropriate folder to the trash and then empty it.
- For security, you should check your settings in the respective browser and make sure, for example, that an extension is still available.
