Mac OS X Mavericks: Disable external hard drives

On Mac OS X Mavericks, you can even disable external hard drives instead of ejecting them. So you don't have to insert and remove your disks every time you start the system.
Disable external hard drive in OS X Mavericks
- First launch the "Disk Utility" using Spotlight Search or the Launchpad.
- Find the hard drive to be deactivated in the left column.
- Right-click on the respective partition (the entry under the actual storage medium) and select the menu item "Deactivate medium".
Mac OS X: Activate the external hard drive again
If you want to use the hard drive again, you do not have to reinsert it. You can activate them in the same way:
- To do this, open the "Disk Utility" again.
- Right-click on the deactivated hard disk and then select the "Activate medium" item.
