Mac OS X: Use smileys and emoticons - so it'll work
As of Mac OS X version 10.7, you can also use emoticons directly from the system bar. This practical tip shows you how to activate the somewhat hidden function.

- Start the control panel. Click there on "Keyboard" and check "Show keyboard and character overviews in the menu bar".
- You will now see the symbol for the keyboard in the status bar. Tap on it and select "Show character overview".
- If you select "Emoji" in the side menu, all smileys and emoticons are available to you, system-wide.
