On June 3, 2019, the new Mac Pro and Pro Display XDR with Retina technology were presented at the WWDC (Worldwide Developer Conference). Here we explain what the new display can do and what is generally meant by retina screens.
What can the Pro Display XDR from Apple do?
With the new Pro Display XDR, Apple has put a lot of effort into it. These are the most important data about the new monitor:
- So far no prices in euros are known. What is certain, however, is that the display will be available in the fall from $ 4999. A stand for the expensive screen is not included.
- It has a 6K Retina display with a 32 inch screen diagonal installed. 6K corresponds to 6016 x 3384 pixels, for a total of 20.4 million pixels.
- The Pro Display XDR has a brightness of constant 1000 nits, which can be increased to 1600 nits for a short time. "Nits" is the unit of light intensity.
- The contrast ratio is a strong 1, 000, 000, 000: 1. The contrast ratio specifies how much brighter a white pixel can be compared to a black pixel.
- The display can be used with the corresponding stand in landscape and portrait format. This costs $ 999 and the wall bracket $ 199.
- Depending on the equipment, the display has a refresh rate between 50Hz and 60Hz.
- The Pro XDR display has three USB-C ports, a Thunderbolt 3 port and of course the power connector.
- It has a P3 color space, which is mostly used in the American film industry, and real 10-bit colors, which means the display has 1024 color gradations.
What is a retina display?
You need to know these points about a Retina display:
- "Retina" is not a general standard, but was invented by Apple. The company describes screens with a particularly high pixel density as "retina displays".
- Nevertheless, Retina Displays are normal LCD screens, i.e. liquid crystal displays.
- With Retina displays, the pixel density should be so high that you can no longer see pixels with the naked eye.
- Retina displays are particularly useful when you want to see small details on your laptop screen. For example, such a display is useful for photo editing.
