Depending on the Mac or MacBook, the shortcuts that you use to put your computer or display to sleep differ. That's how it's done.
Shortcut hibernation on Mac and MacBook Pro
To activate hibernation on MacBooks and Macs that have an eject button:
- To completely bring a Mac to sleep, use the key combination "alt" + "cmd" + "Eject".
- If you only want to lock the screen, use the shortcut "crtl" + "Shift" + "Eject".
Special case MacBook Air: activate hibernation with a key combination
Since the MacBook Air doesn't have an optical drive, it doesn't have an eject button. You can reach hibernation relatively quickly using the power button, but you cannot lock the display. There is also a shortcut for both:
- You can start the MacBook Air from hibernation using the key combination "alt" + "cmd" + "Power" (top right).
- To lock the display without having to close the notebook, press "ctrl" + "Shift" + "Power".
The MacBook Air not only lacks the eject button, but also the delete button. You can see how to retrofit them here.
