Mac: Perform SMC reset - how it works
With an SMC reset on your Mac, you reset the so-called system management controller. This can help with some problems, since the SMC is responsible for functions such as battery control, temperature control and the like. We explain how it works in this practical tip.
This is how the SMC reset for Mac works
You should only perform the SMC reset if you have problems with your Mac. In addition, an SMC reset is only possible on devices with an Intel chipset.
- If you have Mac Pro, iMac, or Mac Mini, all you have to do is shut down your computer and disconnect it from the electrical outlet for 15 seconds. Then reconnect the computer to the electrical outlet and restart it after five seconds.
- If you have a MacBook Pro or Air with a non-removable battery, you must also shut down the computer first. Then connect the charging cable and press the key combination [Shift] + [Alt] + [CTRL] and the on / off switch. Let go of the buttons at the same time. Now start the MacBook by pressing the power button.
- Older MacBooks and MacBooks Pro with removable batteries also require you to shut down the computer first. Then disconnect the book from the mains and remove the battery. Now press and hold the on / off button for five seconds. Reinstall the battery, connect the charging cable to the Mac and restart the computer.
