Mac: repair access rights - how it works
If you suddenly have problems with your access rights on Mac, we will explain how to fix them. The function is included in Mac OS X and restores access rights in just a few steps.
Repair access rights on Mac OS
You can find the tool in the hard disk utility.
- To do this, click on the magnifying glass in the top right corner of the menu bar between the time and the burger symbol.
- Enter the term "disk utility". Confirm with the Enter key.
- Select the volume on the left for which you want to repair the access rights.
- Tap "Check volume access rights". Depending on the size, this takes a while. You can see an estimated remaining time in the same window. In our case, a 128-SSD hard drive with just over 800, 000 files takes just 25 minutes to check on a MacBook Air. The estimated time mostly changes during the review.
- You can then use the "Repair volume access rights" button to restore access rights on your Mac. Depending on the number of errors, this again takes a few minutes. In our case it was around five minutes.
- If you get error messages, you can find disk utility messages from Apple Support that you can ignore.
Another practical tip will tell you how to change the access rights of individual files under Mac OS X.
