MacBook: Fan runs very loud - what to do?
If your Macbook's fan is loud and running continuously, this can be very annoying. You can easily find out what the problem is.
MacBook fan too loud - so fix the problem
- The memory is too busy: If your Mac has little memory or you have permanently opened programs that use a lot of memory, such as Parallels Desktop, this can be a reason for a loud fan. You can work around this problem by retrofitting a larger RAM or alternatively an SSD, as the hard disk is used when your working memory is no longer sufficient.
- Open the "Activity Viewer" with Spotlight and select the "Storage" tab. Here the "virtual memory" should be as small as possible, ideally this memory is zero. The "memory (occupied)" should also be small and as small as possible.
- An error in the settings can also cause this problem. An SMC or PRAM reset will help you here. You can find out what you need to do in Chip's practical tip.
- In addition, you can carefully clean the fan slots on the MacBook with cotton wool or light compressed air. If dust settles here, the fan performance can drop and your MacBook will be louder. We show you how to clean your MacBook fan professionally in our video below.
- There are many tips on the Internet where the fans are made slower and quieter with programs. However, you should not use this technique as this can damage your MacBook. If you still have a warranty on your Mac, you should ask a dealer for advice.
