MacBook won't shutdown - what to do?
If your MacBook can no longer be shut down, we will help you further and show you the options for switching off the device.
1. Program blocks MacBook shutdown
If the MacBook doesn't shut down, it's often because of a program. The program remains open in the background or has hung up so that your MacBook cannot switch off.
- Open the Task Manager by pressing [CMD] + [Alt] + [ESC] at the same time. All open programs appear here. Select this and click on "End immediately".
- Then try to shut down the MacBook again as usual.
2. Force MacBook to restart
If the problem is not with a program, you can force your MacBook to restart and then try to shut down the device as usual.
- To do this, press [CMD] + [Ctrl] and the power button at the same time.
- This will restart the device immediately, but without turning off the power beforehand. This is "healthier" than switching off the computer abruptly.
3. Hard turning off the MacBook as a last resort
The last option is to turn off the MacBook hard. However, this does not shut down the MacBook, but turns it off abruptly.
- To do this, keep the power button pressed until the device has switched off.
- You should then switch the device on again and check whether it can now be shut down as usual.
You can also have your MacBook boot up automatically. You can find out how this works in the next practical tip.
