Buy MacBook Pro or MacBook Pro Retina?
If you would like to buy a MacBook Pro with or without a Retina display, we will help you make this decision with this practical tip.
MacBook Pro vs. MacBook Pro Retina - the differences
- Price: The 13-inch MacBook Pro is available from 1, 099 euros. The MacBook Pro Retina with 13 or 15 inches will cost you 1, 299 or 1, 999 euros.
- Dimensions: The MacBook Pro is 2.41 cm thick and weighs 2.06 kg. The equally large MacBook Pro Retina is only 1.8 cm thick and weighs only 1.57 kg.
- Processor: The processors differ only minimally. Both the small and the large processors of the MacBook Pro are only 0.1 GHz less powerful.
- RAM: The MacBook Pro offers you either 4 or 8 GB of RAM. The Retina model is also delivered with 16 GB.
- Hard drive: The MacBook Pro has a maximum of one HDD hard drive with 512 GB of memory or an SSD with up to 1 TB of memory. The Retina variant is only sold with flash memories with up to 1 TB of memory.
- Resolution: The biggest difference is the display resolution. The MacBook Pro has a resolution of 1280 x 1200 pixels. The MacBook Pro Retina delivers 2560 x 1600 pixels on the same display size.
- Running time: The MacBook Pro surfs the Internet with a full battery for around 7 hours. According to Apple, the MacBook Pro Retina lasts for 9 hours.
- Connections: If you value a FireWire and LAN connection, you have to use the MacBook Pro. The Retina variant, on the other hand, has a second Thunderbolt connection, an HDMI connection, but no CD / DVD drive. The latter is available externally from Apple for 80 euros.
- WLAN: The MacBook Pro supports the currently very secure WLAN standard 802.11n. The MacBook Pro Retina supports the somewhat more recent 802.11ac.
MacBook Pro vs. MacBook Pro Retina - which one to buy?
- The MacBook Pro Retina has a much better resolution, is faster, much narrower and lighter, but the MacBook Pro is a little cheaper. But now the question remains whether the price is really justified.
- For a surcharge of 200 euros, you get a MacBook Pro Retina with many innovations and advantages instead of the MacBook Pro. This surcharge is okay.
- For another 700 euros, you get the Retina version with a two-inch larger display. You get almost two MacBook Pros for this. It is questionable whether the larger display is worth this surcharge.
