MacBook: Switch off the start sound
You can also switch off the very loud Mac OS startup sound from MacBook Pro or Air - not with Apple home remedies, but with a few useful tools that we present here.
The simplest solution: turn off the sound on your Mac
The option to turn off the sound before shutting down the computer is particularly simple. To do this, simply press the [F10] key. However, you must always remember this before you shut down your notebook.
Disable the start sound on Mac OS X Snow Leopard
The free program "StartupSound.prefPane" is available for the Snow Leopard operating system. This incorporates a new function in the system settings with which you can permanently deactivate the start sound. To do this, click on the new symbol and remove the tick in front of "Turn on startup volume control".
Turn off the startup sound on Mac OS X Lion, Mountain Lion, and Mavericks
If you have a MacBook that runs under Lion or Mountain Lion, there are two options or programs with which you can switch off the start tone: The first program is called "Psst" and can be downloaded free of charge:
- After downloading, open the DMG file. A window with the Psst icon appears.
- Drag the icon into the program folder. Only then can it be carried out.
- When you start the application, a small window opens in which you can "arm" the sound suppression.
The second program comes from the Mac App Store, is currently available for 1.79 euros and is called "SleepMute". With this you can personalize the sound settings even further and, for example, specify rules according to which your MacBook automatically switches the sound on and off in certain situations.
