Apple presented the new macOS 10.14 Mojave at the WWDC developer conference. In this practical tip, we will show you which functions the operating system has and what changes you can expect.
macOS 10.14 Mojave: All innovations on the desktop
The new macOS bears the name of the Mojave Desert in the western United States. In addition to visual changes, there are also some new functions.
- Dark Mode has been around since macOS Yosemite. So far, this mode has only covered the dock and the menu bar in a modern black. Now the entire system as well as all Apple and third-party apps should appear in black, if the user so wishes.
- With "Dynamic Desktop" the background image adjusts to the time of day. So far there is only one compatible image in the beta version. If the sun sets slowly outside, the lighting conditions on the desktop background also change.
- If you store several files individually on your desktop, they are automatically sorted into stacks on the right side of the screen. If you move the mouse over the documents, they will all be shown in full size.
- The Finder now has a gallery view. It allows you to preview many file types. On the right side you will find more buttons for quick actions. If necessary, you can customize these buttons.
- Take a screenshot and select the picture directly, you can edit it immediately and without further detours.
- The App Store is also undergoing a major overhaul. The Apple apps "News" and "Home" now come from the iPhone to the Mac. Facetime now supports group chats with up to 32 people.
Security and privacy updates
- Installed apps can only access your camera and microphone if you have given permission to do so. Third-party apps now also require explicit permission to access mail or the messaging app.
- You will often find like and share buttons on websites. These buttons can be used for tracking. Safari blocks these buttons until you really want to use them.
macOS 10.14: Who gets the update?
- While the predecessor High Sierra also supported older Macs from 2009, the requirements for Mojave have increased significantly. Macs must not be older than the middle of 2012.
- If you use a Mac Pro, it must not be older than 2010. Devices from the years 2010 to 2012 are only supported if you have a metal-compatible graphics card.
