MacOS: Clear memory
If your Mac has slowed down a bit, you should definitely empty your RAM. This can increase the speed of your Mac computer again. There are two different approaches to this. You can get more RAM with a command in the terminal or with third-party software. We show you how it works.
Clear memory with a terminal command
With a short command in the terminal you can get more RAM. You should also have opened the activity display at the same time. So you can see how much RAM is actually free.
- Open the Spotlight search at the top right by clicking on the magnifying glass icon. Now enter the keyword "Terminal" and choose the first hit. Leave the terminal open and enter "activity indicator" in the Spotlight search.
- Select the "Memory" item in the activity display at the bottom of the tab and check the free memory value here. Leave this window activated in the background.
- Then enter the "purge" command in the terminal and confirm your entry with the Enter key.
- Now switch back to the activity display and see how much memory is free. Your Mac should work faster now.
Free up memory with programs
There are also some programs from the Mac app store. These also empty your working memory and increase the working speed of your Mac. The apps differ only in small details.
- With the program Memory Cleaner X you can observe the memory progress. You can also clear your storage with one click, speeding up your Mac. The program is free of charge.
- The Memory Magic app not only monitors your memory usage, but also optimizes the memory release.
- The popular Memory Clean program also comes with a menu bar and can be tailored to your needs with a few setting options.
