Change MacOS dashboard background - how it works
You can easily change the normal desktop background in the MacOS settings - the situation is different with the dashboard. In this practical tip, we show you how you can still change the dashboard wallpaper.
Exchange dashboard background in MacOS
In the dashboard you can run small applications - so-called widgets - that show you information such as the time or the weather. To see this overview, just swipe right with three fingers on a MacBook. Unfortunately, the system does not offer a way to change the dreary, gray background - but this works in a few detours:
- First of all, you need the exact resolution of your monitor because the dashboard background is not scaled. You can find out very easily with the screenshot function (CMD + SHIFT + 4).
- Now scale your background to the size you just found: How this works in Gimp is shown in this practical tip.
- Now you have to navigate to the location of the dashboard background. To do this, open the Finder and navigate to the path "System / Library / CoreServices". Right-click the Dock.app program and choose View Package Contents.
- The background image can be found under "Contents" and "Resources" under the file name "dbgrid.webp". Change the file names of this file and the " " file to "old.webp" and " " for security. So you can restore the wallpaper later.
- Now you can paste your picture into the folder. You have to do this twice because you need the files "dbgrid.webp" and " ". The second file is used to preview the dashboard in the overview. After you have modified the file names, your new dashboard is available.
- However, to see the changes, you must first restart the dashboard. To do this, open the terminal and enter the "killall Dock" command. The new background is now displayed.
