MacOS: How to change your WiFi password
Do you want to change the saved WiFi password in your Mac? We show you a possible solution:
You change a new WLAN password first of all via the WLAN router. To do this, go to the router menu via your browser. Read here how this works, for example, with a FRITZ! Box.
Change WiFi password on Mac - network settings
If the router password has been changed, the Mac OS X recognizes itself at least from "Mountain Lion" and automatically asks for the new password when logging in. Should problems nevertheless arise and Mac OS does not recognize the password change automatically, you should first remove the old password manually. And this is how it works.
- Deactivate the WLAN.
- Open "System Settings" -> "Network" and click on "WLAN".
- To make changes, you have to click on the lock symbol at the bottom left and enter your user password.
- Then click on "More options" and in the "Preferred networks" window select the WLAN whose password setting you want to change.
- Now click on the "Minus" button to remove this WLAN from the list and then on [OK].
- Confirm with [Apply].
Change the WiFi password on the Mac using the keychain administration
In order to completely delete the previous WiFi password of your Mac, the following setting in the keychain administration may be necessary:
- Call Keychain Access. You can find it under "Programs" -> "Utilities".
- Select "System" in the Keychain column.
- Right-click on the relevant network and select ["Delete SSID-of-your-WLAN" "].
- Confirm the security question with [Delete] and then enter your password.
- Finally, right-click on "System" in the "Keychain" column and select "Protect your keychain system".
- Now select the WLAN network again and enter the changed password when prompted for the password.
