Every now and then you can read "Made in PRC" on products. This is often surprising because the abbreviation "PRC" is rather unusual in this country. In this article, we reveal which country of production is hidden behind it.
Made in PCR: what does that mean?
With every product we buy, there is an indication of where the product was manufactured. The note is introduced with the words "Made in", which means "Made in" in German. The English name of the country in which the product was manufactured follows.
- This is usually easy to understand, such as "India" or "China". The abbreviation PRC stands for "Peoples Republic of China" or "People's Republic of China" in German.
- It is not officially regulated when "PRC" and "China" are specified as the country of manufacture.
- Note that the country of manufacture only indicates the country in which the last processing step was carried out. For example, a fabric can be manufactured, cut and sewn in India, but the T-shirt can only be dyed and printed in Germany. It is then considered "Made in Germany".
What does "Made in PRC" say about quality?
Many consumers associate products from China with cheap prices but also poor quality. However, this prejudice is not generally true. Please note the following:
- Premium manufacturers from various industries also have their products manufactured in China in order to save costs. Wage costs there are far lower than in Western Europe, for example. But that doesn't mean that the quality is worse.
- Products that are produced in China for the German market must also meet our local safety regulations. Otherwise the import would not be permitted. So you can also expect a certain quality standard from the goods produced in China.
