Magnesium supplements at Öko-Test: half is not recommended
Öko-Test tested 24 magnesium supplements - and found no real test winner. The "best" only received the grade "satisfactory". More than half of the preparations were even rated "poor" or "insufficient". On the one hand, the reason is that magnesium supplements are usually superfluous. On the other hand, the ingredients used are often questionable.
Magnesium preparations in the test: Öko-Test does not recommend a single preparation
Many people think that doing magnesium supplements is good for your body. Healthy people do not need these supplements at all - sometimes they even harm them.
- A healthy person consumes sufficient magnesium through food, recommended is between 300 and 400 mg per day. Neither pregnant women, athletes or the elderly need more.
- Since one of the criteria at Öko-Test is how sensible the preparation is, the "best" products were only given the grade "satisfactory". Because the preparations are not necessary.
- A total of four products were rated "satisfactory": "Doc Morris Magnesium 250", "Edeka Magnesium 250 mg", "Omnivit Magnesium 250" and "Vitafit Magnesium 250". The price of these products is around 2 cents per daily dose.
- Phosphate was also detected in all four "satisfactory" products. However, it is unclear whether it is natural or artificially added phosphate, for example to increase the shelf life. Artificial phosphate easily passes into the blood and there increases the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
- Note: Magnesium supplements are not suitable for children under the age of four and can have a laxative effect.
Test result: Magnesium preparations unnecessary and sometimes very expensive
No magnesium preparation has any use. However, a lot of money is sometimes required for these unnecessary products.
- Nine products were rated "sufficient" in the 2018 test. Two of them contained phosphate, and the declaration and dosage instructions were also criticized.
- You can read all the details of the test as a paid ePaper on oekotest.de (July 2018 edition).
Öko-Test finds many magnesium flops
With the grades "poor" and "insufficient" almost half of the magnesium preparations tested cut off:
- Six times "poor", five times even "insufficient" - that is the result of Öko-Test. Some products have advertised with false promises, Öko-Test also found PVC and chloride compounds on some products.
- Among the preparations rated "insufficient", there were no indications that magnesium preparations are not suitable for children under four years of age and that consumption can lead to diarrhea.
- At the bottom of the list, the "Grandelat Magnesium Taler" also stood out as the most expensive product at 79 cents.
