If you don't have marjoram in the house and are looking for a suitable replacement, there are several alternatives for the spice. We will introduce you to the different options.
Marjoram substitute: Oregano offers itself
Marjoram and oregano are closely related and can therefore be interchanged in dishes.
- Replace marjoram (Origanum majorana) with the same amount of oregano.
- Both herbs have a high seasoning power. However, they differ slightly in their taste. Marjoram is a little finer, but oregano is bitter, powerful and dominant.
- Good to know: Do not use oregano and marjoram at the same time. The flavors overlap and your dishes lose their taste.
More alternatives to Origanum majorana
In addition to oregano, there are other herbs that you can use to flavor your dishes instead of marjoram.
- Thyme is a good substitute. Here, however, you should dose sparingly and taste from time to time.
- If you have savory at home, you can use it as an alternative. You can exchange savory 1: 1 for marjoram.
