Manual updates on Ubuntu - how it works
The automatic updates on Ubuntu work. However, manual updates make your work easier by allowing you to update your computer whenever and wherever you want. In this practical tip, we will show you step by step how to do it.
How to manually download updates on Ubuntu
In this guide, we show you how to download and install updates using the console on Ubuntu. You can also see the individual steps in the picture gallery.
- Open the Ubuntu console using the key combination "Ctrl + Alt + T". Alternatively, enter "Terminal" in the search at the top left.
- You need an internet connection for the updates. If this exists, enter the following line: "sudo apt-get update".
- You will now be asked for your password. Don't be surprised that you don't see what you're typing - the system prevents anyone from knowing how many characters your password has. Confirm with the Enter key.
- Your system loads the package lists. To update the programs, type "sudo apt-get upgrade". No new password prompt appears.
- Depending on the update, some programs require more hard disk space. As you can see in the picture gallery, you have to confirm that. Press "y" to agree.
- The updates are now complete. In some cases a restart is necessary, which you can command in the console with "sudo reboot".
If you want a firewall in addition to the updates, we will show you how to configure them here.
