Repair Master Boot Record (MBR)
If you have a faulty "Master Boot Record" (MBR) and your PC no longer starts up properly, you must repair the MBR.
Repair the MBR with the Windows installation CD
In order to restore the MBR, you need the Windows installation CD. If you have this, do so.
- Insert your Windows 7 / Vista installation CD.
- Specify in the BIOS that your PC starts from the CD (usually press the F12 key at boot).
- Start the computer and then run the Windows recovery environment.
- In the Repair Center, select the entry "Repair your computer".
- Under "System Restore Options" you will find the "Command Prompt". Enter the "bootrec.exe" command there and confirm the action with "Enter".
- Then enter the two commands in succession: "fixmbr c:" and "fixboot c:" (without the quotation marks) in the console.
- Then restart the PC.
This solution refers to a computer with Windows 7 / Vista. If you have a problem with Windows XP, you can find the solution here.
