Mate tea contains numerous substances that have different effects on your body.
- The best known ingredient is surely caffeine. Depending on the strength of the mate tea, the caffeine content ranges between 0.4 and 1.7 percent.
- Mate also contains vitamins A, B1, B2 and C.
- The tea is rich in tannins and also brings a little vanillin.
- The main minerals are potassium and magnesium in mate.
- The flavonoids and saponins, i.e. the secondary plant substances, as well as theobromine and theophylline are also effective in mate.
The effect of the different ingredients
Most of the ingredients in the tea have a positive effect on your health.
- Caffeine: Caffeine wakes you up and improves your concentration. The heart beats faster, which improves blood flow to the muscles, among other things.
- Vitamins: Vitamin A is good for the eyes and the immune system. The B vitamins support various nerve functions. Vitamin C protects the body from free radicals. These are chemical compounds that lead to so-called oxidative stress.
- Tannins: Tannins have an anti-inflammatory and contracting effect on the skin and mucous membrane. They thus support the healing of small injuries.
- Minerals: Potassium regulates blood pressure, among other things. Magnesium is important for the functioning of muscles and nerves.
- Plant substances : Flavonoids have an anti-allergic and antimicrobial effect, i.e. against germs. Saponins have a similar effect.
- Theobromine: Theobromine dilates the blood vessels and has a diuretic effect.
- Theophylline: Theophylline is also used in asthma medications due to its bronchodilating effect. In addition, theophylline has anti-inflammatory and diuretic properties.
Mate tea is not suitable for everyone
Because of its effects, you should avoid mate tea under certain circumstances.
- If you suffer from a stomach ulcer, you should refrain from consuming mate.
- The same applies if you suffer from high blood pressure or irregular heartbeat.
- Even with an overactive thyroid, mate is not a suitable drink for you.
- You should avoid mate during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
