The parliament in Austria decided on November 13 to exempt tolls on five important motorway sections. We'll tell you which sections of the motorway you can now drive free of charge.
Tolls in Austria - General:
The toll in Austria exists on all motorways and expressways - except for the exceptions mentioned below. It is paid in the form of a vignette, a GO toll or a route toll. This ensures the operation and expansion of the road network in Austria.
- The vignette is valid for all vehicles up to a total weight of 3.5 tons, i.e. for cars, motorcycles and light motor homes. The 10-day vignette costs a minimum of € 5.30 for motorcycles and a maximum of € 9.20 for motorhomes.
Abolition of tolls on these routes:
Austria has now decided to exempt tolls for motorway sections near Germany's border. This measure is intended primarily to relieve the pressure on localities and municipalities that have so far suffered from alternate traffic.
The exceptions only relate to a few kilometers from the border to the interior.
- The sections are: Inntal Autobahn A12 (German border to Kufstein-Süd) Westautobahn A1 (Walserberg to Salzburg-Nord) A14 (Hörbranz to Hohenems) A26 (Linzer Autobahn) A7 (Mühlkreisautobahn - still under construction)
- In addition, according to the new law, the Minister of Transport can determine further exceptions by agreement with the Minister of Finance.
- The exemption from tolls still has to be confirmed by the Federal Council. This meets on December 5. If confirmed, the new law could enter into force on December 15th.
