Media Creation Tool - what is it?
If you want to update your computer to Windows 10, you will automatically stumble across the Media Creation Tool. What this is exactly, how it works and whether you really need it, we clarify in this article.
Windows 10: Update old computer using the Media Creation Tool
Since July 29th, 2015 you can update your PC to Windows 10. As a user of Windows 7 and 8, you will automatically receive a notification and guide through the installation.
- If you don't want to wait for the message or install Windows 10 later using an ISO file, you have to use Microsoft's Media Creation Tool.
- If you run the tool on your current system, you can either update it directly to Windows 10 or create an ISO file with the new Windows version. While your data will be lost with the latter, the tool takes over all data and settings of your old system during the upgrade.
- If you decide to create an ISO file for another computer, you can choose between the individual versions and languages of Windows 10. The software then automatically downloads the operating system.
- You can then burn the finished ISO file to a DVD or create a bootable USB stick. Windows 10 can be installed on every computer later.
