Store horseradish correctly: this way it stays fresh for a long time
If you only pay attention to a few small things when storing the horseradish, the healthy ingredients of the spicy vegetables are largely preserved. In addition, the horseradish stays fresh and aromatic for a comparatively long time when stored correctly.
Horseradish - with the right storage preserve the nutrients
The taste of horseradish is unmistakable and certainly not for everyone. The root vegetable owes its spiciness to the mustard oils, which are not only aromatic but also healthy.
- However, these are not the only healthy components of horseradish. Did you know that the root vegetables bring more vitamin C than a lemon? And not just a little more, the horseradish has twice as much vitamin C.
- While 100 grams of lemon contain around 50 milligrams of vitamin C, the horseradish has over 110 milligrams.
- In addition, the horseradish contains the potassium that is important for our blood pressure and electrolyte balance and some B vitamins, which among other things provide for strong nerves.
- Proper storage is essential to preserve the nutrients and unmistakable aroma of horseradish. Essential oils in particular have the peculiarity to evaporate quickly and the taste of horseradish is largely lost.
Store horseradish - this keeps the vegetables fresh and aromatic
If you have your own garden, not only do you have organic horseradish on hand at all times, you also have the ideal storage option.
- Unlike most other vegetables, horseradish does not have to be harvested until a certain point in time. You can safely leave the root vegetables in the vegetable patch and only get as much horseradish as you need in the kitchen. Horseradish is frost-resistant, the vegetables don't mind up to minus five degrees.
- If you get a large amount of fresh horseradish, the garden or, alternatively, the terrace is also a good place to store the vegetables.
- Dig the unwashed root vegetables into damp sand. In this way, the nutrients and aroma of the horseradish are preserved for three to four months.
- If you don't have a garden or terrace, you still have the freezer to store the horseradish for a few months.
- Before freezing the vegetables, wash them. Then dry the roots well and ideally leave them overnight so that the vegetables dry well. The unshelled horseradish comes in portions in freezer bags or freezer tins.
- Basically, only cut as much of the vegetables as you need. Put the not yet peeled horseradish in a food storage container or wrap it in plastic wrap. Then put it in the vegetable compartment.
- You can store cut horseradish for about two weeks without loss. If the root vegetable is neither cut nor peeled, it stays in the vegetable compartment for about four weeks. Before placing it in the vegetable compartment, wash the horseradish and dry it well.
- If you overzealously grated too much horseradish, put it immediately in a jar and close it well. Then the glass comes in the fridge. You will consume the grated horseradish within one to two weeks.
- Note: horseradish is not one of the vegetables that you should dry. When dry, the root loses the mustard oil and thus its aroma.
