More RAM equals more performance? That is behind it
The myth that more RAM would improve the performance of a system persists. But what's there? You can find out in this practical tip.
"More RAM brings more performance": that's the reason
True to the motto "a lot helps a lot", some believe that more RAM has a positive effect on the performance of a computer. However, this is only partially true.
- A computer needs RAM - that is, working memory to temporarily store data that is required for the execution of programs and the operating system. Depending on what you use your computer for, the amount of memory you need varies.
- For simple office applications and a bit of surfing, 4 GB of RAM are just sufficient. If you upgrade to 8 GB, you can do a lot more with your device. A little more RAM is recommended for gaming: it should already be 16 GB.
- Photo and video editing software needs a lot of memory, just like modern games. However, if the main memory is not available, your operating system must create a so-called swap file on the hard disk. However, this is much slower than the fast RAM, so the performance of your computer suffers enormously.
- However, if you already have enough RAM installed in your system, an upgrade at this point is of no use.
