Connect multiple monitors to a laptop - there are options
This practical tip tells you how to connect multiple monitors to your laptop. So you expand your options with more space. However, please note that many models only allow an additional monitor.
Connect monitors to the laptop via HDMI, Displayport or VGA
If you have a commercially available PC monitor, simply connect it to your laptop via the HDMI, Displayport or VGA connection.
- Connect the monitor either via the laptop's HDMI, Displayport or VGA interface.
- On most laptops, use the "Fn" key and an "F" key to make settings for using the 2nd monitor.
- The desktop can be expanded or the image from the laptop can be projected onto the monitor. You also decide whether only one screen should be used or both.
- You can find out whether your laptop supports several external monitors in the manual for your laptop. Most devices are not able to do this, even if two connections exist.
- In addition, there are also monitors like the Asus MB168B +, which you can connect via a USB slot. These are also supplied with power via the USB connection.
- Tip: The simultaneous operation of two screens via a VGA or HDMI interface and via USB works without problems for most laptops.
Connect the external monitor to the laptop using a docking station
As an alternative to the device's own connections, you can connect an external monitor via a docking station. Owners of a MacBook enjoy a particularly large selection, but there are also numerous docking stations online for laptops from other manufacturers.
Connect the tablet to the laptop as a monitor
An Android tablet or iPad can also be used as a second monitor. Here we show you the necessary apps:
- Download the Windows version or the Mac version of "iDisplay" and install the program.
- Then install the app for your iPad or Android tablet.
- For the iPad version, the laptop and iPad must be connected to the same WiFi network. You then only enter the IP address of your Mac in the app.
- Your Android tablet can also be connected via WLAN. You also have the option of connecting your device to the laptop with a USB cable. This helps especially when you are on the go and there is no WiFi network.
- Now your tablet can be configured as a monitor.
Helpful programs for multiple monitors
If you have problems using the second monitor, the following programs will help you:
- "DisplayFusion": With this program you choose suitable backgrounds for your screens. The tool stretches the images and pulls them over both monitors. Your images should therefore have a high resolution.
- "MurGeeMon": This program helps you to control all monitors perfectly. For example, this changes the resolution of one of your monitors. The organization of your output devices is very easy.
- "Dual Monitor Taskbar": If you have connected a second monitor, your taskbar will only appear on one of the screens. The "Dual Monitor Taskbar" program remedies this and extends your taskbar to all monitors.
